About the Pipeline Construction Project
The Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) has begun construction of a new treatment facility and over 3.5 miles of new water pipelines
to clean up perchlorate contamination of our groundwater aquifer, which resulted in the closure of certain wells. The project started in November 2007 and is
estimated to be completed by the end of 2008.
What is Perchlorate?
Perchlorate is used in solid propellant for rockets, missiles, fireworks and explosives. Over a number of decades, it has seeped into our local
groundwater aquifer from the former Bermite site, which is no longer operational, located east of San Fernando Road. Perchlorate can interfere with thyroid gland function.
What Are the Benefits of the Project?
When operational, the project will remove perchlorate from the groundwater to meet drinking water standards and will prevent perchlorate from
migrating further from the site, thus protecting other drinking water wells from contamination. The project will recover over 3,800 acre feet of
water per year and put that water back to beneficial use. One acre foot of water is roughly a football field filled to a depth of one foot. An
acre foot typically provides enough water for two single family homes.
Project Construction Basics
The project consists of installing pipeline in open trenches.
Construction will be centered around the Auto Mall area in the northwest part of the City of Santa Clarita as shown on the
project alignment map.
There will be periodic traffic lane reductions and modified access to local businesses as well as rerouting of some local bike trails.
To mitigate project impacts, construction hours will be
coordinated with the City of Santa Clarita. Information regarding alternative routes, lane closures and traffic detours will be provided by a 24-hour
recorded traffic phone line (661) 513-1296 as well as posted on street signage.
Bike Trails Are Accessible During Construction
For our many bikers and hikers in the community, the Perchlorate Pipeline and Treatment Projects will be constructed in phases to maintain maximum
access to trails at all times during construction. Alternate route signage will be posted along trails. Visit the Bike Trail Information page!

Safety Matters
The public’s safety is of utmost concern to the Castaic Lake Water Agency. For your safety, please maintain your distance from the construction
area, watch out for construction workers, drive slowly and observe all traffic signs. A public information and outreach program has been designed
to provide assistance and response to inquiries and concerns regarding construction.
Keeping You Informed
There are many ways to obtain information and
contact project staff regarding this project including a
24-Hour Hotline, a recorded traffic update line, a website and construction notices. A project field representative can be reached via the Hotline. Just click on
