School Education Program

Who better to educate about water conservation than the Santa Clarita Valley's children? Children in all grades in the Valley are already gaining a wealth of water knowledge provided by CLWA's award-winning School Education Program.

The Castaic Lake Water Agency's Water Education Program provides user friendly activities and materials for local teachers and schools. The program features interactive student activities that present interesting and age-appropriate water treatment and conservation topics.

The curriculum is regularly updated to provide an enjoyable and educational experience for students.

PARENTS:

Ask your child's school if they are taking advantage of this free program! CLWA provides all classroom materials and transportation expenses AT NO COST TO YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT. Please note that the program is available only to schools located within the CLWA service area.

Available Programs

Kindergarten - Classroom Presentation (45 minutes)
A brief introduction on water usage is discussed. During the classroom presentation the children will become familiar with the importance of water in relation to plant growth. This is presented to the students through a story, "The Tiny Seed," two musical productions ("Brown Squirrel" Song and "Mr. Sun" Song) and a scientific experiment with water and seeds. We leave the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

1st Grade - Classroom Presentation (45 minutes)
A brief introduction of the water story is discussed. This classroom presentation focuses on the water cycle. With the use of a felt board, a water cycle song, a story "Water Dance", a musical play and a water cycle bracelet craft, students learn the states of water. We leave the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

1st Grade

2nd Grade – Classroom Presentation (45 minutes)
A brief introduction of the water story is discussed. The water cycle is discussed further in depth with hands on activity. Every child will assist "Drip Drop the Dragon" and "Fred the Fish" as they battle pollution through their travels from the kingdom of Peaceful to the ocean. In addition, the water cycle is highlighted. We leave the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

2nd Grade

3rd Grade – Field Trip (2 Hours)
The tour begins at the Globe discussing the importance of the water cycle and water conservation. Students then proceed to the Sun Spot where a discussion of the elements needed in plant growth is covered. Following this, students are taken to the Garden Lab where they become botanists through activities and a plant dissection. We give the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save. A Plant Scavenger Hunt then takes place outside in the Conservation Garden.

3rd Grade

4th Grade – Field Trip (3 Hours)
This program begins with an extensive discussion of the water cycle, water conservation, water treatment and a variety of water-related topics covered in a Water Jeopardy Games. Along with the globe discussion, a tour of the treatment plant is given. The class is divided into two groups where half the students play the Jeopardy Game while the other students become microbiologists. Each student has the opportunity to use the Scientific Method while observing water samples in microscopes. We give the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

4th Grade

5th Grade – Field Trip (3 Hours)
The tour begins at the globe discussing the importance of the water cycle and water conservation. The students will work in teams to construct, inspect, and operate a work scale model of the Rio Vista Treatment Plant. Included in the field trip is a walking tour of the treatment plant. We give the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

5th Grade

6th Grade – Field Trip (3 Hours)
This tour begins with a short film "Wings over Water" followed by a brief discussion of the water story. Students then work in groups to perform various chemistry experiments with water samples. They will then operate the educational model of the plant and conclude with an extensive tour of the Rio Vista Treatment Plant. We give the class items for the teacher and the students to enjoy. These items remind them where our water comes from and how to save.

6th Grade

7th Grade – Field Trip (3 Hours)
ANALYTICAL WATER TASTE TEST
Students are provided with information regarding treatment of water and the importance of water focusing on taste. We will be using the investigation, experimentation standards, and graphing. These standards enhance our hands-on taste test presentation.

SOIL INVESTIGATION & COMPOSTING
Drought tolerant plants will be emphasized during a short tour of the CLWA Conservatory Garden where students will observe the plant types in their native environments. By stressing the importance of water conservation, composting will be discussed and will include a group constructed compost bin. Included in the program will be a complete laboratory experience for each student as they sieve soil samples and explore the composition of the sample.

MICROSCOPES
Students will receive a brief lesson on microscopes. They will be able to individually view organisms found in soil through microscopes and learn their importance. The nitrogen cycle will also be covered. Nitrogen "fixing" bacteria, nematodes, root nodules and algae will be examined. Attention will be paid to the structure, contribution and interaction of each of these to our ecosystems and each other.

WATER TREATMENT OVERVIEW / OPERATOR OPERATIONS
Student will go on a walking tour and learn who we distribute our water to and where our water comes from. They will learn what we use to disinfect the water and how much is used locally.

7th Grade

8th Grade – Field Trip (3 hours)
WATERBORNE DISEASES
Students will identify the role of water in transmitting diseases. They will compare symptoms of several waterborne diseases. They will analyze the characteristics of environments that promote the transmission of these diseases around the world.

H2O TRIVIA GAME
Students will play a Jeopardy style game testing their knowledge of water.

OIL SPILLS
Each student will hear a discussion on oil spills and its effect on the fresh water ecosystem. By simulating an oil spill, each small group of students will test various materials for absorption rates and realize the effects on wildlife. Students will hypothesize and conduct oil clean up.

SOIL PERMEABILITY
Students will work in small groups with three soil samples and will be provided with information regarding soil densities. Students will test samples for permeability. Using a stop watch students will calculate the time in which the water travels through the soil. They will measure the remaining capillary water.
